Randy Smith became a left below-knee amputee in June 2008 and then a right above-the-knee amputee in May 2009 from diabetes complications. Diabetes has also left Randy completely blind in his right eye. He chose Action Prosthetics late last year because he was having problems with his sockets fitting properly and he says he had never heard a bad thing about our company. After all, Randy wants to stay busy every day!
Karl Burk (Our Prosthetist) recently fit Randy with brand new prosthetic legs. Both legs have carbon fiber sockets complete with custom graphics. He has a computerized knee which is programmed to Randy’s specifications when walking or riding a bike. He loves that his new locks don’t catch on his clothes, the better placement of the battery charger on his computerized knee, and that he can get the knee wet! Randy also mentioned he likes how his new spring-loaded feet have more heel to toe action. He said, “Karl (Burk, Prosthetist) gives much attention to detail when working on my prosthetic legs.”
Randy had worked as an aircraft lineman and in the parts department at Ohio Aviation for 6 years before he became an amputee. His knowledge of airplanes is incredible which is why he chose the socket art that Karl designed for him. Now, with his new prosthetic legs, he can get back to riding his trike. He often rides a quarter-mile from his house to a nearby bike trail. He sees riding up hills as a good challenge! Randy also likes working out and swimming at his local YMCA. He is also able to do daily chores easier such as cleaning, cooking and bathing which takes a lot of energy as an amputee.
When asked if Randy would recommend Action Prosthetics, he said, “Yes!… the staff at Action Prosthetics give quick, caring service and they explained my insurance coverage very well. I give Action Prosthetics a 10 out of 10!!!”
